Roadside mowing 2026/27
Crews are now delivering roadside mowing and vegetation management across Victoria’s road network.
27/10/2026
Between now and late 2026, crews will deliver an initial mowing program across the state’s roadsides, managing roadside grass and other vegetation ahead of Victoria’s fire danger period.
Based on rainfall, growth and other factors, crews will return to some areas of the state to complete additional mowing in early 2027.
Each year, our crews mow, slash and spray an average of XX,000 kilometres of roadsides right across the state.
The timing of grass cutting differs each year, based on rainfall, temperature spring growth and advice from emergency services.
Most grass species possess a life cycle where they annually dry out and die or become dormant.
This process is referred to as curing and is an important factor in fire behaviour prediction as the amount of dead material in a grassland can have a dramatic effect on the fire danger.
Cutting grass once it’s cured helps to reduce fire risk and slow growth over the warmer months.
Mowing before the grass becomes dormant can accelerate the growth of the grass and means that our crews would have to return to complete additional mowing at the height of the fire danger period.
The Country Fire Authority maintains a statewide map of grass curing which is updated on a weekly basis to demonstrate the potential risks of grassfires.
We also collaborate with other services including Victoria Police, the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), the Bureau of Meteorology and local councils to ensure community safety.
