Significant delays in the east this weekend (19 – 22 June)

The Eastern Freeway will be closed in both directions between Chandler Highway and Tram Road from 10pm Friday 19 June to 5am Monday 22 June 2026.

Significant delays of up to 90 minutes are expected.  Avoid the area and allow extra time. 

Signed detours will be in place:

  • If you’re driving towards the city, detour via Tram Road, Manningham Road, Lower Heidelberg Road and Chandler Highway. You can also detour via Doncaster Road, High Street and Studley Park Road.
  • If you’re driving towards Ringwood, detour via the Chandler Highway, High Street, Doncaster Road and Wetherby Road to re-enter the freeway.
  • If you're travelling to the city or airport, consider using an alternative route, including the Monash Freeway or the M80.

Other changes to know  

  • Lanes and reduced speeds on Hoddle Street and Alexandra Parade, near the Eastern Freeway entrance.  
  • Thompsons Road will be closed in both directions between Bulleen Road and the Ringwood bound entry ramp to the Eastern Freeway.  
  • Thompsons Road northbound traffic: detour via Bulleen Road, Manningham Road and Thompsons Road.  
  • Thompsons Road southbound traffic: detour via Bulleen Road, Doncaster Road, High Street and Manningham Road.  
  • No right turns from Doncaster Road (eastbound) into Rose Street, Elgar Road, Tram Road or Frederick Street.

Closed freeway ramps  

These ramps will be shut:  

  • Hoddle Street southbound (Ringwood bound entry)  
  • Middleborough Road (citybound entry)  
  • Blackburn Road (citybound entry)  
  • Springvale Road (citybound entry)  

Pedestrian bridge closures

The Estelle Street pedestrian bridge will be closed over the freeway.  

Street parking will be closed on these roads (both sides)

  • Doncaster Road (Cityview Road to Burke Road)  
  • High Street (Harp Road to Westbrook Street)  
  • Heidelberg Road (Lowther Street to Yarralee Street)  
  • Denmark Street (Wellington Street to High Street)  
  • Princess Street (Studley Park Road to Stawell Street)  


The works are part of the North East Link Project Eastern Freeway Upgrade project with the closure in place so crews can asphalt new freeway lanes, widen the Bulleen Road bridge and build new noise walls between Bulleen and Elgar Road.

Road signage will be in the area to help guide you through. Please plan ahead and allow extra time.
