Eastern Freeway

The Eastern Freeway will be closed between Bulleen and Tram roads from 10pm Friday 15 May to 5am Monday 18 May 2026.

Major delays of up to 60 minutes are expected.  Avoid the area, if you can and allow extra time.

Detours will be in place via Thompsons Road, Manningham Road and Tram Road.

To help keep traffic moving, there will be:

  • Closures of citybound entry ramps from Springvale, Blackburn and Middleborough roads, and the outbound entry ramp from the Chandler Highway.
  • Some turning restrictions will be in place along Doncaster Road and Manningham Road.
  • Parking restrictions along Doncaster Road.

There will be temporary stop closures and detours on bus routes 906, 907 and 908.

The works are part of the Eastern Freeway Upgrade project with the closure in place so crews can asphalt new freeway lanes, widen Bulleen Road Bridge and build new noise walls between Bulleen and Elgar Road.

Both EastLink tunnels to close for maintenance

EastLink (including the Melba and Mullum Mullum tunnels) will be closed in both directions between Springvale Road and Canterbury Road from 8pm Saturday 16 May to 7am Sunday 17 May 2026.

The Ringwood Bypass will also be closed in both directions between Ringwood Street and Maroondah Highway.

Travel advice:

  • Heading citybound, you will not be able to enter the Eastern Freeway until Bulleen Road and Burke Road.
  • Heading outbound, you can access Eastlink via Springvale Road then Canterbury Road. If you’re heading to Ringwood, use Maroondah Highway.

Road signage will be in the area to help guide you through. Please plan ahead and allow extra time.
