Significant delays in the east this weekend (11 – 14 September) 

Significant delays of up to 90 minutes are expected.  Avoid the area and allow extra time. 

Detours will be in place:

Heading citybound: use Tram Road, Manningham Road, Lower Heidelberg Road, Heidelberg Road and the Chandler Highway to detour around the closure.

Heading Ringwood bound: use Chandler Highway, Princess Street, High Street, Doncaster Road and Wetherby Road to detour around the closure. 

For longer trips to the city or airport, consider using alternative arterials including the Monash Freeway or Bell Street
Thompsons Road will also be closed in both directions between Bulleen Road and the Thompsons Road Ringwood-bound entry ramp from 10pm, Friday 14 August until Monday 14 September 2026. 

The works are part of the Eastern Freeway Upgrade project with the closure in place so crews can asphalt new freeway lanes and widen Bulleen Road and Doncaster Road bridges. 

Other changes to the road network during this time

• No right turn movements from Doncaster Road into Rose Street, Elgar Road, Tram Road and Frederick Street, or from Manningham Road into Thompsons Road,
• Hoddle Street entry ramps and Alexandra Avenue lane closures.

Other disruptions in the area

Grimshaw Street and Greensborough Highway closures

• Grimshaw Street will be closed both ways between Frye Street and Greensborough Bypass and between the Greensborough Bypass and Greensborough Road from 9pm Friday 11 September to 5am Monday 14 September 2026.
• During the day, Greensborough Highway will stay open in both directions—but some lanes will be closed, so expect delays.
• At night, Greensborough Highway will close fully both ways between Watsonia Road and the M80 from 10pm each evening.

Tram route impacts

• Trams on Route 48 will experience service changes from 10am to 9pm each day, Saturday 12 September and Sunday 13 September, due to traffic impacts with the Eastern Freeway closure.

Bus route impacts

PTV bus route 200, 905, 906, 907 and 908 will be impacted. To be detoured along the following routes:

• Bus route 200: Manningham Road, Bulleen Road
• Bus route 905: Manningham Road, Bulleen Road, Kilby Road, Chandler Highway
• Bus routes 906, 907 and 908: Doncaster Road, Kilby Road, Chandler Highway
