Kensington Road and Epsom Road intersection long vehicle turn ban

The intersection turn ban for long vehicles will ensure the safety of the community and road users and move longer trucks onto roads better suited for freight.

Why is the turn ban needed?

A review of the Kensington Road and Epsom Road intersection found it is not wide enough for vehicles over 17 metres to turn safely.

Longer vehicles need more space to complete turns and can encroach into adjacent lanes, increasing safety risks for other road users, pedestrians and cyclists.

The turn ban will improve safety at the intersection while directing longer trucks to nearby freight routes better suited to longer vehicles.

What we’re doing

We’ve approved a 24/7 turning ban for vehicles over 17 metres at the Kensington Road and Epsom Road intersection.

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator and Victoria Police will enforce the ban.

Temporary traffic cameras will monitor how many longer trucks are on the road before and after the new rule starts.

This area is home to food wholesalers, manufacturers and logistics companies that help supply goods to residents and businesses.

We understand that keeping goods moving is important for local businesses and industries.

The turn ban has been designed to improve safety while maintaining efficient freight access through alternative routes.

Monitoring the impacts of the West Gate Tunnel

The West Gate Tunnel gives direct access to the Port, and an alternative to the West Gate Bridge, helping keep trucks off local streets.

We're continuing to monitor traffic impacts and make road safety improvements where needed.

Kensington Road has about 64 large six-axle trucks daily, compared to 2500 large trucks on Francis Street in the inner west before the no-truck zones were introduced.

Kensington Road will stay open for general access vehicles to make essential deliveries.

No further changes to heavy vehicle access are planned.

Alternative routes for longer vehicles

Alternative routes for vehicles over 17 metres travelling to and from Dynon precinct include:
 

• West Gate Tunnel via the Footscray Road/Sims Street/Mackenzie Road.
• West Gate Freeway via Whitehall Street and Hyde Street ramps, or via Footscray Road and Dynon Road.
• CityLink/Bolte Bridge via Dynon Road and Footscray Road.
