'The Key'

Inspired by Ballarat being recognised as one of Australia’s (and the world’s) happiest cities, The Key reflects the many elements that contribute to that achievement.

The “key” is not one thing, but many. Flowers and trees are woven throughout the artwork, representing Ballarat’s valued green spaces and a city that continues to grow and change while remaining connected to its past.

The artwork celebrates Ballarat’s vibrant community, rich history and cultural life. Its festive atmosphere is inspired by the many events that fill the city’s calendar each year. Familiar landmarks, visitors arriving by road and rail, and scenes of everyday life all feature within the work.

At its heart are the people, families, groups and organisations whose contributions help make Ballarat the welcoming and vibrant city it is today.
