Community Road Safety Grants Program

Our Community Road Safety Grants Program provides funding to empower local communities to prevent serious injuries and reduce the number of lives lost on Victoria’s roads.

Making change at a community level

We know localised community action is pivotal in reducing the number of lives lost and serious injuries on our roads.

The community road safety grants program aims to prevent and reduce these harms by providing funding for community road safety education programs that influence road users to become aware, understand and make safe decisions.

What funding is available?

We have several programs available as part of this grant program. Each program has allocated funding amounts, read our community road safety grants program guidelines 2026-2027 for more details.

Looking After Our Mates

A 45-minute presentation that is delivered to sporting clubs, and year 12 students, or equivalent. This program educates about the effects of alcohol, and drug driving. It encourages young people to separate drinking, drugs, and driving.

The Looking After Our Mates program is now fully subsidised. This change enables greater flexibility through year-round access to the program, free of charge.

Community Road Safety Grants Program

From 2027, the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP)’s Community Road Safety Grants Program will transition to the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and be incorporated into the TAC’s existing road safety grant offerings.

The aim is to make it easier for community groups, local government authorities and schools to identify suitable funding opportunities for projects that aim to improve road safety outcomes across Victoria.

Why is the change happening?

  • Make it easier to find and access suitable road safety funding opportunities.
  • Reduce confusion by consolidating two community grant programs into a single program delivered by one government agency.
  • Provide a consistent, straightforward experience for groups applying for funding.
  • Enable a more coordinated approach to improving road safety outcomes across Victoria.

What does this mean for potential applicants?

Beginning with the 2027 grant round:

  • Community road safety grants previously offered through DTP will be available through the TAC.
  • Applicants will continue to apply through SmartyGrants.
  • Updated TAC Road Safety Grant Program funding guidelines will be published on the TAC website in February.
  • A briefing session will also be held in February, and pre-application support will be provided to help applicants understand the new program and to support the submission of applications aligned with the program guidelines.

For enquiries regarding the future TAC road safety grant opportunities, please contact the TAC Road Safety Grants Team at [email protected] or visit www.tac.vic.gov.au/roadsafetygrants .
