Protective clothing for motorcycle riders

To avoid serious injury, wear protective clothing when you ride a motorcycle or motor scooter.

You must wear an approved motorcycle helmet when you ride a motorcycle or motor scooter.

You can also reduce your risk by choosing to wear a full-face helmet, by wearing protective jacket, pants, gloves and boots. Where possible, choose the helmet and protective gear with the highest safety rating.

The Motorcycle Clothing Assessment Program (MotoCAP) is an independent body that tests motorcycle helmets, jackets, pants and gloves. They rate clothing’s:

  • impact protection
  • burst resistance
  • abrasion resistance
  • breathability
  • comfort.
