Licence conditions

VicRoads applies conditions to driver’s licences to ensure everyone stays safe on the road. Conditions can only be removed in certain circumstances.


Do I have to carry my licence?

Some people are legally required to always carry their driver licence and/or learner permit when driving or in charge of a motor vehicle in Victoria.

These drivers must be able to produce their licence and/or permit at the request of Victoria Police or an enforcement officer.

These include:

  • learner permit holders
  • probationary licence (P1 or P2) holders
  • driver licence holders, under the age of 26
  • driver licence holders whose licence is subject to an ‘E’, ‘I’ or ‘Z’ condition (includes interstate licence/permit holders who are subject to an ‘I’ condition)
  • driver licence holders when driving a vehicle listed below, beyond an 80km radius of the vehicle's normal place of business:
    • a bus,
    • a heavy vehicle
    • a light vehicle towing a heavy trailer

Zero blood alcohol requirements

The following drivers must have a zero blood alcohol concentration (BAC) at all times when driving or in charge of a vehicle:

  • bus drivers
  • taxi drivers
  • driving instructors
  • drivers of heavy vehicles (vehicles with a GVM over 4.5 tonnes)
  • learner drivers (car and motorcycle), including interstate learner permit holders who are driving in Victoria
  • probationary licence holders
  • restricted motorcycle licence holders
  • licence holders with a 'Z' condition imposed on their licence 
  • learner and licence holders with an alcohol interlock condition

Learner permit conditions

Conditions that may be imposed on your learner permit are:

  • I - alcohol interlock device
  • S - glasses or corrective lenses
  • V - driver aids or vehicle modifications
  • X - any condition or restriction VicRoads has advised you of in writing

Driver licence conditions

Conditions that may be imposed on your driver licence are:

  • A - automatic transmission
  • B - synchromesh transmission - heavy vehicle only
  • E - LAMS restriction, no pillion passenger and zero BAC
  • I - alcohol interlock device
  • N - automatic transmission (motorcycle)
  • S - glasses or corrective lenses
  • V - driver aids or vehicle modifications
  • X - any condition or restriction VicRoads has advised you of in writing
  • Z - zero blood alcohol limit

Marine licence conditions

Conditions that may be imposed on your marine licence are:

  • S - glasses or corrective lenses
  • V - driver aids or vehicle modifications
  • X - any condition or restriction VicRoads has advised you of in writing

The conditions will appear on the front of the card under ‘Conditions’. A short description of the condition is listed on the back of the card.
