Registration and licensing

Identity documentation

You may need to show ID when you register a vehicle or get your license.

To have your identity confirmed you must attend a customer service centre in person. Without the right documents you will not be able to complete your application.

What identity documents do I need?

The most you will need to provide for any application is:

  • one Category A evidence document. This could be an original passport or a full Australian birth certificate. It must prove who you are.
  • one Category B evidence document (evidence of use of that identity in the community. e.g. Medicare or bank card)
  • evidence that you live in Victoria. Provide this if your address is not on the Category A or B documents.
  • evidence of change of name (if your name is different on the Category A and Category B documents).

Giving false or misleading information or documents is a serious crime under the Road Safety Act 1986 and Marine Safety Act 2010. Authorities can fine you or send you to jail. Authorities can take back any approvals or permissions if you do this.

Accepted identity documents

Your Category A and B documents must show your full family name and first name. The names must be in the same order on both documents.

  •  If you have more than one first (given) name the first name must appear on both documents.
  • If you have more than one family (surname) all names must appear on both documents.

Acting on behalf of another person or company

To register a vehicle on behalf of someone else you'll need a signed authority to act as an agent form. Click on identity documents for a company below for more information
