Skenes Creek bridge improvements Great Ocean Road

We’re strengthening the bridge at Skenes Creek on the Great Ocean Road to make your journey safer and more reliable.

Project status:

Planned

Overview

The bridge on the Great Ocean Road over Skenes Creek was built in 1979. Since then, the bridge has aged and now requires essential maintenance and strengthening works to ensure communities and industry along the Great Ocean Road can stay connected.

We’re upgrading several bridges along the Great Ocean Road and its inland routes to ensure vehicles, including heavy vehicles, can continue to safely use these regional networks. Learn more about our Great Ocean Road program of works.

What we’re doing

These works will include:

  • strengthening the bridge deck
  • resurfacing the road over the bridge deck
  • constructing a pedestrian bridge, separate from the vehicle bridge
  • rebuilding the road on the approaches to the bridge
  • installing new safety barriers and refreshed line marking
  • upgrading the bus stops to meet DDA compliance requirements.

Benefits

The benefits of these works include:

  • providing a safe and secure road connection along the Great Ocean Road for all road users including commuters, freight, school and tourist buses, public transport, cyclists, and emergency services
  • boosting the capacity of important freight corridors that are essential to support local industries
  • meeting current standards and demands of modern vehicles.

What to expect during construction

More information will be provided closer to works starting once construction schedules have been finalised. We’ll aim to minimise impact by working outside the peak tourist season, and deliver the work in stages. We anticipate works to be delivered over approximately six months, weather permitting.

Funding

The Victorian Government has allocated $8.5 million to strengthen the bridge over Skenes Creek bridge on the Great Ocean Road as part of the $255 million Great Ocean Road and inland routes program. Learn more about the program.
