Western Rail Plan
The Western Rail Plan sets out the investments Victoria needs to a fast, high-capacity rail network for our growing suburbs and regional cities.
The plan comprises:
- Two new electrified metropolitan train lines through the western suburbs to growth areas in Melton and Wyndham Vale. It would separate them from the Ballarat and Geelong lines.
- Increased rail capacity between Sunshine and the CBD to allow for faster and more frequent metro and regional trains.
- Major investment in the Geelong and Ballarat lines to run trains faster than 160km/h. This will include investigating the electrification of these lines and new, electric regional trains.
- Further planning on fast rail will happen in conjunction with the full Airport Rail Link business case, to be completed in 2020. It is likely that the next step in delivering regional fast rail will be the separation of the Wyndham Vale and Melton lines from regional lines.
