Planning next generation trains and trams

Future rolling stock planning is under way. This will create opportunities for suppliers to get involved in major train and tram projects - and to partner with the best in Australia's rolling stock supply chain industry.

New Regional Trains

The Department of Transport is developing a business case for a modern New Regional Train to continue to meet passenger needs and growing demand on the regional network.

The business case will also identify and assess supporting infrastructure requirements such as stabling and maintenance facilities, and how best to integrate the trains with the network.

Key benefits

The New Regional Trains will carry more passengers, provide a more comfortable journey, enabling the classic fleet to be phased out over time and be more energy efficient.

The new design will address future needs and enable the retirement of the ageing high-floor tram fleet.

The business case will also identify and assess supporting infrastructure requirements, such as stabling and maintenance facilities.

Key benefits

The Department of Transport will have improved accessibility features to enable people to easily board the trams, better passenger amenity and flow, and deliver innovations in energy use and storage.
