Summary
We’re undertaking important maintenance works to resurface and replace the waterproof membrane on three of the citybound lanes of the bridge. The maintenance works are necessary to ensure the bridge continues to safely manage the significant traffic volumes that travel on the bridge annually.

Emma: The West Gate Bridge is important to Victoria.

Emma: There’s approximately 205,000 vehicles per day travelling to their workplace, to their homes and their communities across the east and west of Melbourne and a really important connector to the Melbourne central business district.

Aidin: During the Christmas breaks, starting from Boxing Day to the 4th of January. We usually take the water proofing membrane replacement works, which includes replacing the asphalt. We do it over a very short period of time, we do the work 24/7 to ensure we can reopen the bridge to the traffic as soon as possible.
Aidin: There are two key factors, one of them is there is less traffic on the bridge, the second one is the weather is perfectly suitable to apply the membranes on top of the steel section of the bridge.
