Tinamba speed reduction

We’re reducing the speed limit in the township of Tinamba.
Project status:

Complete

Transport Victoria is introducing a safer speed limit in Tinamba township from 60 km/h to 50 km/h. These changes will take effect before Christmas 2024 and are designed to enhance safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and all road users.

Why is the speed limit being reduced?

Speed plays a critical role in road safety. Slower speeds give drivers more time to react if something goes wrong, increasing the chances of regaining control and avoiding a crash. By lowering the speed limit to 50 km/h, we can help create a safer road environment that protects all users.

As humans, we all make mistakes. Roads should be designed to be forgiving, so when a mistake happens, it doesn’t cost a life or result in severe injury. The updated speed limit is one way to make the roads in Tinamba safer for everyone.

By ensuring the speed limit is appropriate for the road, we can help prevent crashes and reduce their severity, protecting vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.

This decision was made following a thorough assessment conducted in line with the Department of Transport and Planning’s Speed Zoning Guidelines, which consider factors such as:

  • crash history
  • road design and geometry
  • pedestrian and bike rider activity, and
  • road usage patterns.

What’s next?

New speed limit signs will be installed around Tinamba in the coming weeks to reflect this change. Transport Victoria encourages all road users to observe the updated limits and help ensure the safety of everyone in the community.
