Spout Creek bridge replacement, Great Ocean Road
We’re replacing the Spout Creek bridge on the Great Ocean Road at Eastern View, to make it stronger, safer and more durable.
Underway
The Spout Creek bridge replacement project is delivering a strong, safer structure for future transport needs, and improving connectivity and safer journeys along the Great Ocean Road for locals, visitors, and industry.
Update – March 2025
Works are progressing well, with traffic now travelling on to the newly constructed bridge, allowing for the demolition and replacement of the remaining part of the original bridge.
One-lane, two-way traffic, with a speed restriction and temporary traffic lights, remains in place.
Please note: dates and timeframes of these works are dependent on a range of factors, including favourable weather and site conditions.
All motorists are reminded to follow the directions on road-side signage.
Two-lane, two-way traffic, with a speed restriction, is expected to be in place prior to Easter.
Works will pause over the Easter period with the project expected to be completed by mid-2025, weather permitting.
What we’re doing
The Spout Creek bridge on the Great Ocean Road at Eastern View, between Moggs Creek and Lorne, was originally built in 1954 and widened in 1973. Since then, the bridge has aged, and a new bridge will ensure communities, visitors and industry continue to stay connected along the Great Ocean Road.
This project includes:
- removal of the existing bridge that was built in 1954 and widened in 1973
- construction of a new bridge at the same location
- installation of new bridge railings
- establishment of new road pavement at bridge approaches
The new bridge will be a safe, reliable crossing that improves connectivity on the Great Ocean Road and boosts the capacity for heavy vehicles that support local industries.
What to expect
Works are expected to be completed in mid-2025, weather permitting.
While the works are underway, there will be some disruptions on the Great Ocean Road, however traffic flow will be maintained at all times.
Crews will be on site from Monday to Friday, between 7am and 6pm, with the possibility of some weekend works.
At the bridge, a 40km/h speed limit will be in place to keep drivers and workers safe. Traffic controllers will be on-site during work hours to assist with shuttle flow. Temporary traffic lights will manage traffic at other times.
When construction is active the carpark on the east side of the Spout Creek bridge will be closed for the duration of the works.
Look out for signs alerting to changed traffic conditions for the safety of road users, the community, and our crews. Please allow additional travel time as minor delays are expected.
Thank you for your patience while we complete this essential project.
Benefits
We’re replacing the Spout Creek bridge to:
- ensure the structure is safer and more durable for future transport needs
- increase the lifespan and reliability of the structural crossing, so that load limits don’t need to be imposed in the near future
- improve connectivity and safer journeys along the Great Ocean Road for locals, visitors and industry
