Safer speeds and movements, Hume Freeway, Kalkallo
We are introducing a safer speed limit on the northbound lanes of the Hume Freeway at Kalkallo and improving safety by banning U-turns at two high-risk locations by 30 November 2024.
The speed limit on the northbound lanes between Donnybrook Road and Cameron Street will be reduced from 100km/h to 80km/h.
Safer speeds provide drivers with more time to react in dangerous situations and reduce the distance it takes for a vehicle to come to a stop, reducing the likelihood and severity of road crashes and improving safety for everyone.
At times there is an increase in traffic turning right from the northbound lanes into the Cameron Street median. The safer speed limit will provide more time for other northbound road users to notice and respond safely to queued traffic that is waiting to turn. A lower speed limit will also reduce the severity of crashes if they do occur.
Accidents have been recorded at Cameron Street. To further improve safety, U-turns will be banned at the Cameron Street and Gums Lane median openings.
When to expect us
The new speed limit and bans on U-turns will be legally enforceable once the signs are installed in November 2024.
What to expect
To ensure the speed change is clearly visible to drivers, we’re installing 12 new 80km/h speed limit signs along the northbound lanes of the Hume Freeway on both sides of Donnybrook Road and on the Hume Freeway access ramp from Donnybrook Road.
We are also installing temporary electronic message signs to help increase driver awareness of the speed change.
To ensure the new bans on U-turns are visible, we will install four ‘no U-turn’ signs on the northbound lanes of the Hume Freeway - two on the approach to Cameron Street and two on the approach to Gums Lane.

Everyone has a role to play in road safety and this includes driving to the conditions, expecting the unexpected and avoiding distractions.
Drivers should be aware of the changed road conditions and drive with care in the area.
