Murradoc Road upgrade
Complete
Update - March 2025
Works to improve safety for all road users, including bike riders, are complete.
The works included road widening, new pavement, line-marking and new safety barriers, guideposts and signs on a 1.5km section of the road between Becks Road and Portarlington-Queenscliff Road near Drysdale, and a 3km section between Bluff Road and McLeod Street in St Leonards.
The works were part of the Australian Government’s Investment Road and Rail Program which includes a range of traffic and transport initiatives to make the Bellarine Peninsula bike rider friendly and connected, while reducing congestion.
Overview
Murradoc Road is an east-west arterial road, forming a link between Drysdale and coastal towns on the Bellarine Peninsula including Portarlington, Queenscliff, Indented Head and St Leonards.
During peak periods, Murradoc Road between Drysdale and St Leonards experiences increasingly heavy volumes of local and tourist traffic. In turn, the growing traffic volumes increase the likelihood of crashes and reduce the level of safety for bike riders sharing the road.
In the 5-year period to January 2024, there were nine crashes recorded between Drysdale and St Leonards, with seven crashes resulting in serious injuries.
Benefits
- improved road safety for all road users
- reduced congestion and interactions between bike riders and vehicles
- minimised risk of bike rider and car crashes and run-off-road crashes, and
- increased bike rider use and appeal of the Bellarine Peninsula area as a bike rider friendly location.
