Latrobe Terrace and Fyans Street intersection upgrade

We’re undertaking safety improvement works at the intersection of Latrobe Terrace and Fyans Street in Newtown, Geelong.

Project status:

Underway

Update - May 2025

The second stage of safety improvement works at the intersection of Latrobe Terrace and Fyans Street in Newtown will commence on Monday 19 May, 2025 and take up to six weeks to complete.

Stage two works will include line marking and median works to widen the east and west bound lanes of Fyans Street and extend the right turn lanes in both directions. The works will complete the upgrade project.

The upgrade will create a safer intersection for all road users, improving traffic flow and helping to ease congestion, with more space for drivers making right hand turns and travelling through the intersection.

Traffic impacts

Traffic management will include lane closures on Fyans Street and areduced speed limit of 40km/h to protect the safety of crews and road users. Road users are encouraged to plan their journey to minimise disruptions.

Construction will be completed Monday to Friday between 9am and 4:30pm.

Please take care when travelling through the work site for your own safety, the safety of our road crews and the safety of others on the road. Look out for signs indicating changed traffic conditions and allow extra time for your journey.

As part of these safety improvements, three parking spaces on Fyans Street, between Latrobe Boulevard and Macaulay Lane, will be removed to allow for the westbound lanes of Fyans Street to be widened.

Overview

This intersection safety upgrade is funded by the Australian Government as part of the Black Spot Program.

Latrobe Terrace has three lanes in each direction carrying about 37,000 vehicles every day, while Fyans Street has up to 17,000 vehicles each day. Linking to semi-industrial areas and surrounded by major businesses, high volumes of freight vehicles use the intersection daily.

In the five-year period ending December 2022, there were 16 crashes, six of these resulting in serious injuries.

This project is being delivered in two stages. Stage one works were completed in April 2024 and included:

  • the extension of the Melbourne bound right-turn lane on Latrobe Terrace (to support eastbound vehicles turning onto Fyans Street)
  • Fully controlled right-turn arrows at the intersection

The second stage of works will be undertaken in 2025 and include:

  • line marking and median works to widen the east and west bound lanes of Fyans Street
  • the extension of the right turn lanes in both directions on Fyan Street
