Kangaroo Ground, intersection maintenance works

We’re delivering vital road rehabilitation works on a section of Kangaroo Ground-St Andrews Road between and including the intersections of Kangaroo Ground-Wattle Glen Road and Eltham-Yarra Glen Road.

We will rebuild the road base, install sub-surface drainage, resurface the road with new asphalt and apply fresh line marking to extend the road’s life and improve safety.

This work is part of the Victorian Government’s $964 million investment in the 2024–25 road maintenance program.

Project update - June 2025

We  have adjusted our works schedule to keep traffic flowing around the intersection.

Day works will now take place between 9am and 3pm to reduce the impact on morning peak hour traffic and school commute times.

The delivery schedule for these works has been affected by our adjustments to the day working hours and recent wet weather. The details below have been updated accordingly.

When to expect us

  • Works are underway and expected to be finished by the morning of Monday 30 June 2025.
  • Most works will take place at night between 8pm and 5am, excluding Friday and Saturday nights.
  • Night works with detours are expected to begin on the evening of Sunday, 15 June 2025.
  • Drainage works are underway and expected to be complete by Monday 23 June 2025. Day works will now take place between 9am and 3pm.

What to expect

  • Night works will take place in two stages (details below). Please observe electronic signs in the area for information about completion of stage 1 and the commencement of stage 2 that includes changes to detour routes.
  • Each night of works will involve a closure of one of the two intersections and detours.
  • Detour routes will be different for Stages 1 and 2.
  • Access for local residents and property owners within the closure zones will be maintained guided by traffic controllers. Refer to the blue closure zones for both stages of works in the detour maps below.
  • Emergency vehicles and heavy vehicles will be guided through the work site by traffic controllers.
  • There will be no full closures or detours during day works.
  • Medium to high noise levels, especially when removing the old road surface.
  • Lights and reversing beepers will be used on machinery for worker safety.
  • The noisiest work will be scheduled earlier in the night when possible.
  • Some vibration and dust are expected and speed limits around the work site will be reduced during works.

By working during the day and at night we will complete the works as quickly as possible and reopen the road as soon as it is safe to do so. Due to the depth of excavation required to safely complete these works, the road will be fully closed at night with detours in place.

As these works require favourable weather they may be rescheduled at short notice. We will advise of any changes to dates.

Please follow all signs and the directions of traffic controllers, plan ahead and allow between 20 to 30 minutes extra travel time depending on the detour in place.
