Green Triangle Bridgewater Road and Portland Ring Road (Henty Highway), Portland

The Australian Government is committed to delivering upgrades in the Green Triangle region.

What we are doing

The Green Triangle Freight Action Plan has identified an opportunity to improve safety and efficiency for trucks travelling along the Henty Highway, including over-dimensional vehicles that are too large to travel under the existing Bridgewater Road bridge at the Portland Ring Road in Portland.

The solution will aim to:

  • improve freight accessibility for over-dimensional loads travelling to and from the Port of Portland
  • improve efficiency for vehicles carrying over-dimensional components for equipment including windfarm renewable energy projects that need to travel through this location
  • reduce the volume of heavy freight using local roads as an alternative route
  • improve safety for all road users.

Next steps

Thank you to everyone who completed the online survey or attended our information sessions in October 2023. The engagement has informed the next steps of the project, with future options currently under assessment.

Below are some answers to frequently asked questions.

Overview

The Portland Ring Road is a key freight route for tourism, forestry, windfarms, mineral sands and dairy production.

Around 5,500 vehicles travel via the Portland Ring Road (Henty Highway) each day (including approx. 2,300 trucks). The Bridgewater Road bridge over the Portland Ring Road currently has a height clearance of 5.2 metres, which doesn’t meet the needs of heavier and wider high performance freight vehicles, leading them to seek alternative routes via local roads in Portland.

Funding

This project is part of the Australian Government’s $58.6 million investment into the Green Triangle region.
