Gembrook-Launching Place Road motorcycle safety improvements

We have delivered a range of motorcycle safety improvements along Gembrook-Launching Place Road between Gembrook and Launching Place.

Project status:

Complete

Gembrook-Launching Place Road has a history of motorcycle accidents. Between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2020 there were 44 recorded crashes.

To make Gembrook-Launching Place Road safer for motorcycle riders, we have:

  • sealed road shoulders at key locations along the length of the road to help riders and other road users stay in control of their vehicles if they veer off the road, and to minimise loose material that can present a safety risk from being spread on to the road
  • sealed 16 intersections along the length of the road with 865 tonnes of asphalt to help riders and other road users stay in control of their vehicles and to reduce loose materials being spread across the road
  • installed and upgraded safety barriers appropriate for motorcyclists (including impact-absorbing barrier ends) at key locations along the road
  • patched the road surface at key locations along the length of the road with 881 tonnes of asphalt
  • improved signage and line markings at various locations along the length of the road.
  • sealed more than 80 driveways using 612 tonnes of asphalt to minimise loose material being spread on the road and reduce hazards for motorcyclists
  • installed more than 200 drainage pipes to improve drainage along the sides of the road and to reduce water runoff from sealed driveways damaging the road surface
  • installed 48 driveable endwalls on either side of select driveways to improve safety for vehicles that run off the road and ensure drainage under driveways has a longer lifespan.

The Motorcycle Safety Levy

These safety upgrades were funded by the Motorcycle Safety Levy and managed by the Department of Transport and Planning.

If you ride a motorcycle with an engine 126cc or larger that is registered in Victoria, you’ve paid the Motorcycle Safety Levy. This means that you contributed to making your ride safer on Victoria’s roads, including on Gembrook-Launching Place Road.
