Forrest-Apollo Bay Road - geotechnical works

We’re constructing a new retaining wall on Forrest-Apollo Bay Road south of the Turtons Track intersection, near Tanybryn.

Update – October 2024

Works will start from 28 October and take approximately three months to complete, weather permitting.

Due to a recent landslip, these works have been brought forward in our construction program for the safety of motorists. These geotechnical works will protect the longevity of the natural roadside landscape and improve safety for all road users.

These geotechnical works will be completed as part of the Victorian Government’s $255 million investment into the Great Ocean Road and its inland routes. This includes $115 million to upgrade inland routes between the Great Ocean Road and the Princes Highway, which are vital connections for tourism, freight and local communities.

What we’re doing

This project includes:

  • Earthworks
  • Construction of new retaining wall
  • Pavement works
  • Barrier installation

What to expect

To keep everyone safe, speed limits are currently reduced to 40km/h and a lane closure in place. Temporary traffic signals are on site to guide traffic through the area, one lane at a time.

Construction will pause over the summer holiday period and recommence in early 2025. Reduced speed limits and a lane closure will remain in place during this time for the safety of motorists. The dates of this project pause are being finalised.

Disruptions

While the works are underway, there will be disruptions. Please look out for signs and allow for extra time when travelling through the area.

Crews will be on site from Monday to Friday, between 7am and 6pm, with the possibility of some weekend work.

Reduced speed limits and a lane closure will remain in place during construction, with access remaining open at all times. Traffic controllers will also be on site to help road users travel safely through the area. Crews will aim to minimise delays and access impacts as much as possible.

Please note: dates and timeframes of these works are dependent on a range of factors, including favourable weather and site conditions.

We thank you for your patience as we deliver this important project.
