Cobungra River Bridge (Omeo Highway) repairs, Anglers Rest
We’re carrying out repair work on the Cobungra River Bridge on the Omeo Highway in Anglers Rest, East Gippsland.
Underway
30/01/2025

Overview
We’re repairing and strengthening the bridge to maintain its current load limit. This includes replacing the northern abutment and other timber components.
Work is expected to start in early February and be completed by March 2025.
Traffic impacts
- The bridge will remain open, but short closures (up to 15 minutes) may occur.
- A reduced speed limit and existing load limit will be in place.
- Traffic controllers will be on-site to help vehicles cross safely.
Heritage preservation
Cobungra River Bridge is a timber-beam structure with local heritage significance. While its exact construction date is uncertain, some of its original timber piles date back to the early 1900s.
To maintain the bridge’s traditional appearance, we have sourced timber that closely matches the original materials. This approach ensures that while essential repairs are made, the bridge retains its familiar look and character.
Environmental considerations
We are minimising impacts on vegetation, wildlife, and waterways and have obtained a Works on Waterways permit from the North East Catchment Management Authority.
