Update - November 2024

We’re making things safer at this busy intersection by installing traffic lights, adding dedicated turning lanes and a new pedestrian crossing on Bignell Road.

Preconstruction work, including relocation of all utility services, is now complete and preliminary construction is underway.

From Monday 11 November, we will begin works to install new electrical conduits across Bignell Road and undertake fencing and vegetation removal works (including a large tree) on the St Peter’s Church corner.

To undertake this work safely and efficiently, we will need to close Bignell Road between Centre Road and Lois Court during work hours.

When to expect us

The works along Bignell Road will run from Monday 11 November through to early 2025.

To minimise the impact on school drop-off and pick-up and commuter traffic, the closure will be in place from 9.30am to 2.45pm, Monday to Friday. Outside these hours the road will reopen to traffic.

A two-way detour will be in place along Florence Street, Brady Road and Chesterville Drive during the closure for the duration of this stage of works. See below detour map.

Please note times and dates are subject to favourable weather conditions and the contractor’s program of works.

What to expect

Works along Bignell Road will occur during the daytime from Monday 11 November and will include:

  • Vegetation removal, including one large tree
  • New fence construction on the St Peter’s Church corner
  • Boring and cutting the road surface to install underground conduits for the new traffic signals.

Throughout this stage of works, impacts will include:

  • Closure of Bignell Road between Centre Road and Lois Court between 9.30am and 2.45pm weekdays
  • Lane closures at different stages along Centre Road
  • Traffic management personnel on-site on Centre Road and Bignell Road to help drivers, walkers and bike riders move safely through and around the work zone
  • A reduced 40km/h speed limit through the work zone
  • Medium to high noise levels at different stages for drilling and trenching across Bignell Road and Centre Road – we’ll work to minimise noise as much as possible.
Clearly signed pedestrian detours will be in place around the work zone.

We will continue to keep the community informed of impacts.

We encourage all drivers to please drive to the conditions and take notice of signage and on-site traffic management for the safety of our workers, the community and all road users.

Thank you for your patience during these important safety improvement works.

About the project

The upgraded intersection will help traffic queuing along Bignell Road safely turn left or right on to Centre Road as well as improving safety for pedestrians accessing nearby St Peter’s Primary School and Catholic Church.

A new coloured bicycle box and line marking will also improve safety for cyclists along Bignell Road, creating separation and reminding drivers of the potential presence of cyclists.

The existing pedestrian crossing on Centre Road, opposite the primary school, will not be impacted by the intersection upgrade works.
