Update - March 2025
We’re making things safer at this busy intersection by installing traffic lights, adding dedicated turning lanes and a new pedestrian crossing on Bignell Road.
Since we began work in 2024, we have:
- completed all utility service relocations
- installed electrical conduits for the new traffic signals
- removed vegetation, constructed a new footpath and relocated the St Peter’s Church boundary fence along Bignell Road
- widened Bignell Road to prepare for the new left-turning lane.
From Sunday 23 March, we will begin asphalting work on Centre Road and Bignell Road.
To undertake this work safely and efficiently, and to minimise disruption to the road network, these works will occur at night.
When to expect us
The asphalting works will begin from the evening of Sunday 23 March and run through to Thursday 27 March.
Works will occur from 8.30pm to 5am each night.
Please note times and dates are subject to favourable weather conditions and the contractor’s program of works.
What to expect
During this stage of works, you can expect:
- Lane closures with shuttle flow on Centre Road, reopening to two-way traffic during the day with a 40km/h speed limit in place
- Closure of Bignell Road between Centre Road and Lois Court, reopening during the day with a 40km/h speed limit in place
- A two-way detour will be in place along Florence Street, Brady Road and Chesterville Drive during the Bignell Road closure
- Traffic management personnel will be on-site on Centre Road and Bignell Road to help direct drivers through or around the work zone
- Noise, vibrations and dust during the asphalting works - contractor will work to undertake the noisiest work in the early part of the evening where possible
- Pedestrian access will be maintained during works, with signage and traffic controllers on-site to help guide walkers and bike riders safely around the work zone
- Reversing beepers will be used as per regulations
- Lights will be used within the work zone.
We encourage all drivers to please drive to the conditions and take notice of signage and on-site traffic management for the safety of our workers, the community and all road users.
Thank you for your patience during these important safety improvement works.
About the project
The upgraded intersection will help traffic queuing along Bignell Road to safely turn left or right on to Centre Road as well as improving safety for pedestrians accessing nearby St Peter’s Primary School and Catholic Church.
A new coloured bicycle box and line marking will also improve safety for bike riders along Bignell Road, creating separation and reminding drivers of the potential presence of cyclists.
The existing pedestrian crossing on Centre Road, opposite the primary school, will not be impacted by the intersection upgrade works.
