Overview

In late 2022, the Buninyong Community Road Safety Committee was established, thanks to funding from the Victorian Government under the Flexible Local Transport Solutions program – which provides funding to partner with local government and community organisations for small-scale transport projects.

The committee included representatives from the Buninyong and District Community Association, Traffic Action Group, City of Ballarat, Victoria Police, the logistics and freight industry. Members of the Department of Transport and Planning’s local Movement and Safety, and Scoping and Development, teams provided specialist advice to the committee.

Over the past two years, the committee met 13 times to discuss safety in Buninyong, with a focus on priority projects in the village area of the township. Key themes identified included:

  • Importance of supporting the safe movements of pedestrians through the township area.
  • The desire for a road environment that encourages safer vehicle speeds
  • Removing barriers to, and improving opportunity for, active transport.

The committee appointed a qualified consultant to develop a list of optional projects to improve safety. The detailed design work was completed in 2024.

Transport Victoria is progressing two projects identified by the group to improve safety in Buninyong:

Road Safety Improvements

Midland Highway (Learmonth Street) from Cornish Street to Lal Lal Street - Upgrades to a section of the highway, including line marking changes to shorten the overtaking lane and create dedicated left and right turn lanes at intersections to reduce the risk of rear-end crashes.

Safety Improvements on Geelong Road (Warrenheip Street)

Reduce speed limit from 60km/hr to 40km/hr in a high pedestrian area of the Buninyong township on Geelong Road (Warrenheip Street) from Midland Highway (Learmonth Street) to Palmerston Street. Line marking changes to provide on road cycling lanes.

In 2025, the road safety improvements on Midland Highway and the safety improvements on Geelong Road (Warrenheip Street) will be delivered by Transport Victoria. Project updates will be provided on this webpage.
