Bass Highway corridor planning
We’re looking at ways to improve traffic flow and safety along the Bass Highway between Anderson and Leongatha. This planning study will be used to inform future road improvement planning.
Planned
Overview
The Bass Highway corridor planning study is funded through the State Government’s $21 million Planning our Future program which aims to investigate options for improvements to road infrastructure to best support Victoria’s growing regional communities.
As part of the program, RRV undertook an extensive engagement process from December 2017 to March 2018 to identify existing issues and future problems along the Bass Highway between Anderson and Leongatha.
During this time, we asked local businesses, key stakeholders and the community about their experiences travelling on this section of the Bass Highway. We asked about their concerns in specific locations along this corridor and their suggestions on how to improve safety and traffic flow.
We received feedback via community information sessions, social media and our interactive map. Through these different engagement methods, we reached approximately 40,000 people.
You can read a summary of the feedback in our engagement update.
Details
In July 2019, RRV hosted two community information sessions to present preliminary concept designs for potential upgrades to the Bass Highway from west of Kilcunda Ridge Road to Ridgway Road in Kilcunda, and at the Leongatha South-Outtrim Road and Rougheads Road intersection in Leongatha South.
RRV is pursuing funding opportunities for these improvements. These projects will be considered for funding alongside other projects planned across the state.
We’re also continuing to investigate potential improvements to the Bass Highway at other locations between Anderson and Leongatha based on the community feedback we received between December 2017 and March 2018, including:
The introduction of an overtaking lane between Dalyston and Kilcunda
The upgrade of the Glen Forbes Road and Walker Street intersection in Dalyston
Benefits
The key benefits of the proposed upgrades include:
- Improved pedestrian access and safety crossing the Bass Highway in Kilcunda
- Improved traffic flow
- Safer and easier access to and from Bass Highway
- Increased business and tourism attractiveness
- Improved access to public transport services.
