Hume Freeway, Beveridge/Kalkallo (southbound) maintenance works
We’re delivering important road maintenance works on the Hume Freeway in Beveridge and Kalkallo.
18/04/2024
What we’re doing
We’re resurfacing the southbound lanes of the Hume Freeway in Beveridge and Kalkallo between Gunns Gully Road and the Donnybrook Road off-ramp.
The works require a full closure of the southbound lanes of the Hume Freeway from the Wallan off-ramp through to Donnybrook Road in Kalkallo.
This work is part of the Victorian Government’s recovery package in response to the October 2022 floods.
These essential works will involve resurfacing the road to maintain its condition and are necessary to prevent further degradation.
When to expect us
Crews will work continuously from 9pm Friday 19 April to 5am Monday 22 April and 9pm Friday 3 May to 5am Monday 6 May, weather permitting, to minimise disruption to the community. There will be no works across the Anzac Day weekend.
- Contractors will set up for the weekend of works from 6pm each Friday.
- The southbound lanes will be closed to traffic from 9pm each Friday.
- Road users that reach the Wallan off-ramp before 9pm can continue to travel along the southbound lanes of the Hume Freeway as usual.
Road maintenance requires dry, temperate weather conditions when removing and re-laying the road surface. Please note that the dates and times are subject to change due to weather conditions.
What to expect
The southbound lanes of the Hume Freeway will be fully closed from the Wallan off-ramp to Donnybrook Road for each full weekend of works.
Detours will be in place throughout the duration of the works for southbound traffic on the Northern Highway and the Hume Freeway.
There will be impacts for the residents of Wallan and Beveridge, as well as Kalkallo residents and businesses located near to the Hume Freeway. Please take note of the specific impacts for your location and journey.
Plan ahead and allow for at least 25 minutes of additional travel time as you move through the area via the signed detours.
Beveridge residents should allow an additional 10 minutes to travel north along the Hume Freeway to the start of the main southbound detour route in Wallan.
To help plan your journey, visit the VicRoads website and search ‘Hume Freeway, Beveridge/Kalkallo, maintenance works’. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we carry out these important maintenance works.
Detours and traffic impact information
Detours will be in place during across each full weekend of work.
Main detour
- This map shows the main detour for vehicles travelling south on the Northern Highway and Hume Freeway, along with the secondary detour from the Hume Freeway.
- Hume Freeway southbound traffic will exit the Freeway at the Wallan off-ramp and turn east on to Wallan-Whittlesea Road. Traffic will follow this road east, turning south into Epping-Kilmore Road, travelling south to where the road becomes Merriang Road until turning west into Donnybrook Road and rejoining the Hume Freeway at the Donnybrook Road on-ramp at Kalkallo.
- Traffic may also choose to leave the Hume Freeway earlier at the Wandong off-ramp, travelling south along Wandong Road which then becomes Epping-Kilmore Road. Traffic will then continue south to where the road becomes Merriang Road until reaching Donnybrook Road and then turn west to travel along Donnybrook Road to the Hume Freeway on-ramp at Kalkallo.
- Northern Highway southbound traffic will divert east in Wallan along Watson Street, travelling over the Hume Freeway to where it becomes Wallan-Whittlesea Road. Traffic will follow this road east, turning south into Epping-Kilmore Road, travelling south to where the road becomes Merriang Road until turning west into Donnybrook Road and rejoining the Hume Freeway at the Donnybrook Road on-ramp at Kalkallo.
Wallan detour
- This map shows the detour for Wallan residents. Motorists will not be able to travel south on the Northern Highway to join the Hume Freeway. To travel south during these works, Wallan motorists are advised to travel to Watson Street and go east along the main detour route, travelling over the Hume Freeway where it becomes Wallan-Whittlesea Road. Traffic will follow this road east, turning south into Epping-Kilmore Road, travelling south where the road becomes Merriang Road until turning west into Donnybrook Road and rejoining the Hume Freeway at the Donnybrook Road on-ramp at Kalkallo.
Beveridge detour
- This map shows the detour for Beveridge residents. Motorists will not be able to travel south on the Hume Freeway during these works. Beveridge motorists are advised to join the northbound lanes of the Hume Freeway, exit on to the Northern Highway, travel north to Wallan, turn east along Watson Street and travel over the Hume Freeway where it becomes Wallan-Whittlesea Road. Traffic will then follow this road east, turning south into Epping-Kilmore Road, travelling south where the road becomes Merriang Road until turning west into Donnybrook Road and rejoining the Hume Freeway at the Donnybrook Road on-ramp at Kalkallo.
Beveridge residents should allow up to 35 minutes additional travel time for their full southbound detour via Wallan.
Kalkallo residents and businesses
Motorists will not be able to enter the Hume Freeway southbound lanes via private entry/exits or streets to the north of 1260 Hume Freeway, Kalkallo. Residents and businesses to the south of 1260 Hume Freeway can enter the southbound lanes via private entry/exits and via Patterson Street. It is recommended that vehicles travel south on the closest north/south local road and then travel west along Donnybrook Road where they can join the Hume Freeway at the southbound on-ramp.
Residents travelling from the north of the Kalkallo Creek and east of the Hume Freeway in the areas of Mitchell, Yaldwin and Malcolm Streets (east of the Kalkallo Creek) can enter and exit the area via Cameron Street. To enter the area, travel north on the northbound lanes of the Hume Freeway and cross the southbound lanes at Cameron Street with the assistance of traffic controllers. To exit the area, travel to Cameron Street and cross the southbound lanes with the assistance of traffic controllers to join the northbound lanes and then travel to Wallan to join the main southbound detour route. Please note that this supported entry/exit option is available for residents only.
