Bicycle education programs

Bike Ed

Bike Ed is a resource designed to help Victorian school students learn how to be safe when riding their bikes.

Riding a bike is an important life skill that helps people in Victoria get around their local community, travel to school or work, save money, stay fit, become more independent, and make friends. Bike riding is for everyone!

About Bike Ed

Bike Ed teaches children and young people how to ride bikes safely and be responsible road users.

It helps students build their bike riding and road safety skills from early primary school all the way through high school. The program aligns with Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and has been created for Victorian schools by teachers.

This popular program has been supporting teachers to deliver bike education in their schools for over 40 years.

The program is run by the Department of Transport and Planning and supports teachers with:

  • curriculum aligned and differentiated units of work teaching students how to be safe cyclists, road users and pedestrians from approximately ages 8 to 14.
  • instructor training through a train the trainer approach. This training has been updated and is now designed and delivered by teachers for teachers. It's a one-day practical course (with some preliminary online modules) delivered at your school.
