Port Phillip and Western Port boating infrastructure management review

The Victoria Government has committed to reforming the management of boat ramp infrastructure in Port Phillip and Western Port.

As part of this commitment, Better Boating Victoria has commissioned Deloitte to undertake a review of the management of recreational boating infrastructure at these locations.

The review will be undertaken in consultation with recreational fishing and boating stakeholders, current infrastructure managers, service providers and relevant agencies to provide options to improve management arrangements.

The aim of the review is to investigate ways to improve how boating facilities are maintained and managed in these busy and much-loved marine waters.

The review is expected to be completed by April 2020.

What will the review involve?

The review will include the following components:

  • Identification of current issues with management of recreational boating infrastructure
  • Release of a discussion paper outlining the current issues and to receive feedback from stakeholders about the management of recreational boating infrastructure.
  • An assessment of current management practices
  • An assessment of recreational boating assets in Port Phillip and Western Port
  • Options for management improvements
  • Consideration of a dedicated boating infrastructure authority.

The review is expected to be completed by April 2020.

Will there be opportunities to provide input into the review?

Better Boating Victoria intends to release a discussion paper in a bid to identify current issues with management of recreational boating infrastructure.

Stakeholders will have an opportunity to comment on the paper and provide feedback via a survey.

What will be the outcome of the review?

The review will identify options to improve management of boating infrastructure.

This may include better ways of managing, maintaining and funding our boating facilities, or implementing efficiencies such as coordinating dredging programs.

Options will become clearer as the review progresses and once issues have been confirmed.
