No truck zones in Melbournes inner west

Rules and regulations for business and industry

Large trucks, including those heading to the port and empty container parks, will need to use the tunnel and no longer drive through residential streets in the inner west.

This page explains the exemptions to the no-truck zones that will come into effect when the tunnel opens.

Truck drivers and businesses should start preparing for these changes now, planning their new routes and understanding how to make the most of the travel benefits.

No-truck zone exemptions

Trucks that have an origin or destination within the no-truck zone will only be allowed to enter for one of these purposes:

  • a delivery to or from a place within a no-truck zone
  • performing construction or maintenance work within a no-truck zone
  • vehicle repairs or sales within a no-truck zone
  • driving to or from a garaged address in a no-truck zone

These types of heavy vehicles will still be permitted in no-truck zones:

  • bus
  • 2-axle truck that is not transporting a shipping container
  • tow truck
  • concrete truck
  • waste disposal truck

Motor homes, emergency and police vehicles, considered heavy vehicles, can also enter a no-truck zone.

How no-truck zones will be enforced

Smart roadside cameras will monitor trucks along the no-truck zones 24/7, collecting information to help the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator enforce the rules. Compliance and enforcement of regulations will begin when the West Gate Tunnel opens.

Drivers or businesses that continue to use roads in the no-truck zones without an exemption will be fined. The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator will hold the vehicle's registered owner responsible for fines if their truck is caught in a no-truck zone.

How to find out if your vehicle type can travel in a no-truck zone
