Getting ready for No-Truck Zones in the inner west - Fact sheet
Underway
West Gate Tunnel to open in 2025
The West Gate Tunnel will cut travel times and take big trucks away from local roads.
For people living in the inner west this means safer roads, improved local air quality and less truck noise for residents. With links to the port, the West Gate Tunnel gives trucks a more reliable and direct connection and creates a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge.
Exemptions will apply to trucks with local origins and destinations. This ensures that local businesses and households can continue to receive and supply goods While you'll still see trucks for garbage collection, grocery deliveries, and moving houses, the large port bound trucks will no longer use six key inner west streets.
Thousands of trucks off local roads
As part of the West Gate Tunnel Project, we're introducing 24-hour no-truck zones in the inner west on six key roads:
- Francis Street in Yarraville
- Somerville Road in Yarraville
- Buckley Street in Footscray
- Moore Street in Footscray
- Blackshows Road in Altona North
- Hudson Road in Spotswood
West Gate Tunnel Project benefits

- Improve freeway connections to make it easier to move people and goods
- Make local roads and the West Gate Freeway safer and more reliable
- Add nine hectares of new public space in the west and a new 2.5 kilometre vcloway for cyclists

Talking about no-truck zones
We'll be out talking with industry, businesses, councils, and community groups to ensure everyone understands how the no-truck zones will work.
We will be helping truck drivers understand the rules and their new travel routes well before the West Gate Tunnel opens.
This way, truck drivers can prepare for the changes and make the most of the benefits of the project.
You'll see us out and about, talking with truck drivers and sharing maps and route details soon.
New roadside cameras
Roadside cameras will detect trucks in no-truck zones and ensure drivers follow the rules.
We are installing and testing cameras to get ready to enforce the no-truck zones and detect trucks that should not be there.
We'll help the regulator with enforcement, focusing on drivers who continue to use local roads.
We'll also hold the vehicle's registered owner responsible for any fines if their truck is caught in a no-truck zone.
Exemptions
Exemptions may apply for trucks that require access to destinations within the no-truck zones for deliveries, construction or maintenance work, vehicle repairs or sales and other situations prescribed in supporting regulations.
This means local homes and businesses in the
no-truck zones can still have the trucks they need for their deliveries and services, making it easy to keep the local economy going.
We're working to ensure a fair and consistent approach to enforcing these new rules.
No-Truck Zones in the inner west
Trucks will go under instead of through the inner west when the West Gate Tunnel opens. This will give local streets back to local people and help trucks make faster and more reliable trips.
A new alternative for trucks
Trucks heading to the port or empty container parks will no longer be premitted in designated no-truck zones.
Instead, they will have access to a second river crossing with direct connections to the port, as well as new ramps at Hyde Street in Yarraville for trucks unable to use the tunnel.
Express lanes between the M80 and the West Gate Freeway will keep traffic moving, along with dedicated ramps and roads designed to reduce operating costs and emissions.
Trucks will also have easy access to the Bolte Bridge, Williamstown Road, and Millers Road, providing conveniemt routes west to Laverton and north to the airport via Citylink and the Monsah Freeway.

Travelling from the west
We're improving truck access from the west at Barnes Rood and Grieve Parade in Altona North,
We're making it easier to get onto the freeway, with more lanes and freight routes from the Ml and M80, the north sections of Millers Road in Brooklyn and Williamstown Road in Yarraville.
There will be extra lanes and less queuing on these essential routes that trucks will continue to use.
To help with these changes, the Victorian Government is improving connections from
Toll discounts and caps
Toll discounts and daily caps for truck operators using the West Gate Tunnel will deliver big efficiency benefits for the freight industry. Special tolls will apply for frequent users and port shuttle trips, making the freeway convenient and cost effective.
Go to the Transurban website for toll prices.
