Have your say on the Glen Huntly level crossings

Work is ramping up on the level crossing removal project in Glen Huntly, with activity to increase around the rail lines in the coming weeks as the project to remove two dangerous and congested level crossings continues.

The level crossings at Neerim Road and Glen Huntly Road will be removed by lowering the line into a trench and fast-tracked, with boom gates gone in 2023 and the project complete a year ahead of schedule in 2024.

With geotechnical investigations and service locations well underway, the project team is asking for input from the community to inform the final design. Locals are encouraged to share what they would like to see in and around the new Glen Huntly Station and how they move around their neighbourhood more generally.

The two Glen Huntly crossings cause frustration for around 20,000 vehicles each day, where the boom gates can be down for half the morning peak. Delays are worsened by the 200 trains per day travelling very slowly through one of Melbourne’s last remaining tram squares, a manually operated level crossing used by trains and trams.

A rail trench was identified as the best way to remove the level crossings, following a range of technical assessments in the area. Building a rail trench will mean shorter construction timeframes, and less frequent rail and road disruptions, It also maximises the opportunity to integrate the station with the surrounding area.

The rail corridor is very narrow at the corner of Neerim Road and Queens Avenue. The amount of space required to construct a rail trench and to accommodate the four tracks running through this section of the rail line means this project will extend beyond the existing rail corridor.

While the team worked to minimise the impact of the project on surrounding land, and every effort was made to avoid impacting homes and businesses, the narrow rail corridor means that eight properties must be acquired during this process.

Landowners will not have to vacate their properties for more than two years, and the project team is working closely to support them throughout this process.

Once the level crossings at Neerim Road and Glen Huntly Road are removed there will be no level crossings on the Frankston line between Flinders Street and Moorabbin Station.

Works at Glen Huntly are part of the Government’s massive $3 billion investment on the Frankston line, which includes removing 18 level crossings and building 12 new stations.
