East Melbourne tram terminus upgrades

A section of Wellington Parade, East Melbourne will close to trams and traffic next week as crews work to upgrade the terminus to cater for more trams, especially during special events at the MCG.

The round-the-clock works will take place between Hoddle and Clarendon streets from 10pm on Sunday, 25 October until 6am on Monday, 2 November.
The works will include track and overhead wire renewal, track elavation, street lighting upgrades and traffic signal and island installation.
The completed works will allow for up to eight low floor trams to be stored at the terminus during special events. The terminus can currently only cater for five shorter trams.
The works will also renew tram tracks and overhead wires that are more than 30 years old, ensuring a quieter and safer journey.
During the works, Route 48 tram services will divert down Macarthur Street, Victoria Parade and Victoria Street with replacement buses also operating between Parliament station and Barkers Road.
Route 75 tram services will run down Swan Street with replacement buses also operating between Russell St and Riversdale Junction.
Motorists are advised to detour outbound via Clarendon Street, Victoria Parade and Hoddle Street and inbound via Hoddle Street, Victoria Parade and Lansdowne Street.
Shops, businesses and footpaths on Wellington Parade, between Hoddle and Clarendon streets, will remain open during the works.
However, there will be no local or driveway access or street parking available, with residents encouraged to park in surrounding streets.
To ensure the safety of all workers and the community, all construction and maintenance work undertaken will operate under a High Risk COVID Safe plan.
Real-time traffic conditions are available at traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au or via the VicTraffic mobile app.
