Towing decreases acceleration and braking ability. Avoid sudden braking, acceleration and steering. Slow down when making turns and avoid making sharp turns if possible.
Be cautious when applying the brakes at the start of your trip.
- Check they’re working by gradually increasing the pressure applied to the brake pedal.
- If necessary, use the electric brake control knob to adjust the braking force to suit the trailer’s load.
- If you notice any unusual behaviour, ask a qualified mechanic to test them for you.
Remember that you’re driving a larger combination. You will have a slower acceleration and increased stopping distance.
- Leave extra space between you and the vehicle in front, and when turning into traffic, overtaking or changing lanes.
- Look further ahead than usual to respond to traffic and road conditions.
- Keep left to give overtaking vehicles room to pass. Where possible, pull over to allow vehicles behind you to overtake.
Obey speed limits. On top of other dangers, the risk of swaying increases with higher speeds.
Keep an eye on the engine temperature gauge. The additional stress of towing means the engine is more likely to overheat on hot days.
Reversing with a caravan is difficult. Where possible, park in places where you can drive forward.
Drive carefully in poor conditions and in high winds. There is more chance of swaying in high winds or when passing larger vehicles.
Be wary of encounters with trucks, road trains and other heavy vehicles. Consider wind buffeting as you pass them.
Schedule more rest stops and shorter travelling days for long trips. Towing is more stressful than normal driving, and more likely to cause tiredness.
