Drink driving offences

An overview of what happens if you're caught drink driving and how to get your licence back after a driving ban for a drink driving offence.

If you are caught driving with a blood or breath alcohol concentration (BAC) over the legal limit you will face heavy fines, and loss of licence with a requirement to install an interlock before being relicensed. The most serious offenders face possible imprisonment.

The penalties for drink-driving differ, depending on:

  • the type of offence you committed
  • when you committed the offence
  • your age at the time of the offence
  • the licence or permit you held
  • if it wasn't your first offence.
