The road safety program

The Australian and Victorian Governments have an ongoing commitment to improving road safety by delivering improvements to our network designed to reduce road trauma and save lives.

What we're doing

The road safety program supports the fast roll-out of lifesaving road safety treatments on rural and regional roads and promotes greater protection for vulnerable road users, like cyclists and pedestrians, in urban areas.

The Australian and Victorian Governments are investing an additional $157.5 million to deliver another 54 projects, bringing the road safety program investment since January 2021 to $457 million.

Of this additional funding, the Australian Government is contributing $112.4 million, with the Victorian Government providing $45.1 million.

The initial $300 million in 2021 is already improving safety with around 130 projects being delivered to protect Victorian road users.

This latest investment means the road safety program will now deliver more than 180 safety improvement projects on state highways and arterial, and local roads, creating jobs and helping local economies. Upgrades include shoulder sealing and rumble strips to help motorists stay in control of their vehicle if they veer off the road, flexible safety barriers to prevent head-on and run-off-road crashes and upgrades to protect cyclists and pedestrians.

This builds on the Victorian and Australian Governments’ $97.2 million investment through the targeted road safety works program and aligns with the target set out in the Victorian road safety strategy to halve the number of deaths and significantly reduce serious injury on our roads over the next 10 years.

Upgrades through the road safety program are being delivered by VicRoads and Safer Roads program under the Department of Transport.
