Uralla Road and Nepean Highway Intersection Upgrade
Planning is underway to improve safety and access for all road users at Uralla Road and Nepean Highway intersection in Mount Martha.
Planned
Project update - December 2024
The Department of Transport and Planning has engaged Major Road Projects Victoria to support planning for the Uralla Road and Nepean Highway intersection upgrade.
Major Roads Projects Victoria will keep the community informed of updates and next steps once planning work has further progressed.
What we're planning to do
The upgrade will include:
- new traffic lights with pedestrian crossings at the intersection of Uralla Road and Nepean Highway
- realigning Uralla Road to form a cross-intersection with Nepean Highway and The Briars entrance
- other pedestrian and bike rider safety improvements.
Benefits
When the upgrade is completed, it will:
- create safer access for drivers entering into or exiting from Uralla Road and The Briars
- improve safety for all road users at the intersection, including vulnerable road users such as bike riders
- meet the demands of future population and economic growth in the area.
Project background
Uralla Road and Nepean Highway intersection will be made safer thanks to the Australian Government’s investment into the Investment Road and Rail Program, delivered in partnership with the Victorian Government.
Mount Martha is a seaside suburb on the Mornington Peninsula, 80km south of Melbourne. Approximately 18,000 vehicles travel along Nepean Highway in Mount Martha every day. Uralla Road is one of the primary access points into and out of Mount Martha from the Nepean Highway.
In the 10 years leading up to March 2020, 11 crashes were reported at Uralla Road and Nepean Highway intersection and five crashes resulted in serious injury. Fortunately no lives were lost.
High traffic volumes, the downhill slope and poor visibility of vehicles due to the curve on Nepean Highway are all contributing factors to drivers experiencing difficulties in entering and exiting Uralla Road.
