Traralgon Bypass planning project
This planning project will identify solutions to improve safety and amenity in Traralgon.
Planned
Overview
This planning follows on from significant work carried out by VicRoads in the 2000s that included a preliminary road design for the bypass route, as well as flora, fauna, economic, land use and cultural heritage assessments.
The route was chosen following comprehensive research and planning carried out by VicRoads and Latrobe City Council. This route was formalised in the Latrobe Planning Scheme in 2009.In August 2017, the State Government announced $1.4 million towards planning of a highway bypass of Traralgon.
Regional Roads Victoria has undertaken a planning study for the Traralgon Bypass on behalf of the Victorian Government.
The study has investigated the economic, environmental, social and traffic impacts of the Bypass as well as its interaction with the Loy Yang Mine.
What we’ve done so far
We have engaged with key stakeholders, including local government, businesses, the freight industry, landowners and the community, to understand the current issues with the Traralgon road network and the likely benefits and impacts of building a bypass.
We received feedback via community information sessions, social media and our interactive map. Through these different engagement methods, we reached approximately 88,000 people.
You can read a summary of the feedback in our engagement update.
We also reviewed the social, landscape, heritage, agricultural, environmental, visual and land use impacts of building a bypass on the current alignment. In addition, we have explored the options for on and off ramp locations.
Our studies included extensive transport modelling to understand the likely impact of bypass traffic on local roads now and into the future.

Next steps
Planning for the bypass can continue once critical information about the rehabilitation of the Loy Yang Mine becomes available.
Given the proximity to the Loy Yang open cut, construction of a bypass on the gazetted alignment may impact on options for rehabilitation of the Loy Yang mine.
We are continuing to work with Earth Resources, the Mine Land Rehabilitation Authority, DELWP and the State Government to understand the requirements of mining and mine rehabilitation now and into the future.
Once these requirements are established, the Department of Transport and Planning will be in a better place to provide further information about the progress of the Traralgon Bypass.
