Swan Hill Bridge Planning Study
We're maintaining the current Swan Hill Bridge, and investigating options to provide a safe, reliable and fit for purpose crossing into the future.
Planned
Update
The planning studies for a replacement bridge have found that the condition of the existing bridge has deteriorated at a faster rate than originally expected. To maintain a safe and fit for purpose crossing Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) NSW has been carrying out maintenance work on the bridge. Current works involve the installation of external support structures to remove current width restrictions.
Roads and Maritime Services NSW in partnership with VicRoads, has recently completed the Murray River Crossings Investment Priority Assessment that will help inform and prioritise future investment decisions for Murray River Crossings. The assessment determined the bridge needs to be given priority funding given its importance and current condition.
VicRoads will continue to work with RMS on an investment strategy to provide a safe, reliable and fit for purpose crossing that meets the needs of the Swan Hill and Murray Downs communities.
Overview
Swan Hill is the main commercial and administrative centre for the region and a popular tourist destination attracting approximately 150,000 visitors each year. It is a major freight distribution centre for produce from the surrounding region on both sides of the Murray River.
To determine a suitable location for a replacement bridge, planning studies were undertaken between 2007 and 2011 in consultation with Roads and Maritime Services Swan Hill Rural City Council and the former Wakool Shire Council.
The planning studies considered the deficiencies of the existing Murray River crossing, cultural and environmental constraints and impacts and the future strategic growth needs of the Swan Hill and Murray Downs area.
In August 2012, the Minister for Planning, Victoria approved the adoption of Option 9A as the location of the replacement bridge.
A Planning Scheme Amendment and Planning Assessment Report were undertaken in Victoria and an Environmental Investigation and public submissions to a Planning Panel were held in NSW.
