The Spout Creek bridge on the Great Ocean Road at Eastern View, between Moggs Creek and Lorne was originally built in 1954 and widened in 1973. Since then, the bridge has aged and now requires essential maintenance works to ensure communities, visitors and industry continue to stay connected along the Great Ocean Road.
What we’re doing
This project includes:
- removal of the existing bridge that was built in 1954 and widened in 1973
- construction of a new bridge at the same location
- installation of new bridge railings
- establishment of new road pavement at bridge approaches
The new bridge will be a safe, reliable crossing that improves connectivity on the Great Ocean Road and boosts the capacity for heavy vehicles that support local industries.
What to expect
Works started in August 2024, and will take approximately eight months to complete, weather permitting. Bridge construction will pause over the holiday period.
While the works are underway, there will be some disruptions on the Great Ocean Road, however traffic flow will be maintained at all times.
Crews will be on site from Monday to Friday, between 7am and 6pm, with the possibility of some weekend works.
At the bridge, a 40km/h speed limit will be in place to keep drivers and workers safe, and traffic will travel on a single lane for approximately 200 metres. Traffic controllers will be on-site during work hours to assist with shuttle flow. Temporary traffic lights will manage traffic at other times.
The carpark on the east side of the Spout Creek bridge will be closed for the duration of the works.
Please note: dates and timeframes of these works are dependent on a range of factors, including favourable weather and site conditions.
Look out for signs alerting to changed traffic conditions for the safety of road users, the community and our crews. Please allow additional travel time as minor delays are expected.
Thank you for your patience while we complete this essential project.
