Safer speeds on Whitehall Street

We’re introducing a new 40km/h speed limit on Whitehall Street between Hopkins Street and just south of Bunbury Street.

Project status:

Planned

Project update - May 2024

From Wednesday 22 May 2024, a new 40km/h speed limit will be in place on Whitehall Street between Hopkins Street and just south of Bunbury Street in Footscray.

Crews will be working overnight to install new signs along Whitehall Street. During works, you can expect lane closures and reduced speed limits in place to keep the crew safe.

Electronic roadside signs will be placed on-site to alert drivers of upcoming works and changed traffic conditions.

The new 40km/h will help improve safety for vulnerable road users including pedestrians, bike riders and kids travelling to and from St Monica’s Catholic Primary School.

By making sure the speed limit is right for the road environment, we can reduce the likelihood and severity of road crashes, and allow pedestrians, bike riders and drivers to share the road safely.

Project background

Approximately 16,000 vehicles travel on Whitehall Street in Footscray every day. In the five years leading up to June 2023, there were 10 reported crashes on Whitehall Street between Hopkins Street and Bunbury Street, with three of these crashes resulting in serious injuries.

In March 2024, we installed new signs, additional line marking and yellow coloured pavement at the crossing near Wingfield Street to make it safer for pedestrians to cross Whitehall Street.
