Safer speeds on Hopkins Street and Dynon Road
Planned
Project update – July 2024
From Monday 8 July 2024, there will be a:
- new 40km/h speed limit on Hopkins Street between Moore Street and Hopetoun Bridge
- new 60km/h speed limit on Dynon Road between Kensington Road and just east of Dock Link Road.
The new speed limits will be in place 24/7. By making sure the speed limit is right for the road environment, we can reduce the likelihood and severity of road crashes, and allow pedestrians, bike riders and drivers to share the road safely.

What to expect
Crews will work progressively along Hopkins Street and Dynon Road to install new static signs; one location at a time. The new speed limit will be legally enforceable when the static signs are installed.
During works, you can expect lane closures and reduced speed limits in place to keep the crew safe. Electronic roadside signs will be placed on-site to alert drivers of changed traffic conditions.
Works are subject to weather and contractor works programs.
Project background
In the five years leading up to January 2024, there were 31 reported crashes on Hopkins Street and Dynon Road between Moore Street and just east of Dock Link Road, with one of these crashes resulting in a fatality and ten resulting in serious injuries.
By making sure the speed limit is right for the road environment, we can reduce the likelihood and severity of road crashes, and allow pedestrians, cyclists and drivers to share the road safely.
In May 2024, a safer 40km/h speed limit was introduced on the nearby Whitehall Street between Hopkins Street and just south of Bunbury Street in Footscray.
