Rutherglen Heavy Vehicle Alternative Route
The Australian and Victorian governments have jointly funded the Rutherglen Heavy Vehicle Route project in response to community concerns about the impacts of heavy vehicles on the safety and amenity of Main Street (Murray Valley Highway).
Underway
The project was funded to identify and upgrade a route within the existing road network. The project was not funded to consider construction of a heavy vehicle bypass.
Update - September 2022
After extensive community engagement, consideration of several other route options and working closely with Indigo Shire Council, Regional Roads Victoria has determined the preferred option is to improve the Murray Valley Highway as the existing arterial route in Rutherglen.
This will involve improvements to Main Street (Murray Valley Highway) and at the intersection of the Murray Valley Highway and Federation Way.
These improvements are designed to formalise pedestrian crossing points and increase motorist awareness on entering the pedestrian activity zone.
Murray Valley Highway improvements
Improvements planned for Main Street (Murray Valley Highway) Rutherglen include;
- Changes to linemarking to create a buffer between parked vehicles and vehicles in the traffic lanes.
This involves narrowing both the traffic lanes and the parking bays slightly to provide a visual buffer which will encourage vehicles to allow more room for people to enter and exit parked cars.
While this is a change in the linemarking, the width of the road does not change meaning vehicles who need to move briefly into the buffer, for example if passing an oversized vehicle, can do so.
- Installation of pedestrian kerb outstands at key locations to encourage pedestrians to cross Main Street (Murray Valley Highway) at these points rather than stepping out from in between parked vehicles.
This will involve the removal of 12 on-street car parking spaces where pedestrian kerb outstands are installed. Landscaping will also be undertaken at these locations to improve amenity, enhance the feeling of a lower speed environment and improve sightlines.
- On-road linemarking, referred to as Dragon’s Teeth, will be used to alert motorists to pedestrian crossing points and the Main Street-High Street intersection.
Improvements planned for the intersection of the Murray Valley Highway and Federation Way include:
- installation of turning lanes to improve safety for turning vehicles
- installation of lighting
- improved signs and linemarking.
