Road Safety Program
Victorian roads are being made safer as part of the Australian Government’s $3 billion Road Safety Program, being delivered in partnership with the Victorian Government to reduce road trauma and save lives.
Overview
The Australian and Victorian Governments have an ongoing commitment to improving road safety for all Australians and reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries on our roads.
Project summary
The Road Safety Program funding supports the fast roll-out of lifesaving road safety treatments on rural and regional roads and promotes greater protection for vulnerable road users, like cyclists and pedestrians.
Between 2025 and 2027, the Australian and Victorian Governments are investing $139.5 million to deliver another 16 projects, bringing the Road Safety Program investment since January 2021 to over $717 million.
Of this additional funding, the Australian Government and Victorian Government are contributing $69.7 million each toward the program.
The $578 million invested since 2021 is already improving safety with around 209 projects delivered or currently underway to protect Victorian road users.
This latest investment means the Road Safety Program will now deliver 225 safety improvement projects on state highways and arterial, and local roads, creating jobs and helping local economies. Upgrades include shoulder sealing and laying of rumble strips to help motorists stay in control of their vehicle if they veer off the road, flexible safety barriers to prevent head-on and run-off-road crashes, and improvements to protect cyclists and pedestrians.
The Road Safety Program is an initiative outlined in the Victorian Governments’ Road Safety Action Plan 2 released in December 2024. The second Road Safety Action Plan continues to work towards the target set out in the Victorian Road Safety Strategy towards our vision of zero deaths on our roads by 2050.
Upgrades through the Road Safety Program are being delivered by the Department of Transport and Planning in partnership with local councils.
