Remembrance Drive/Madden Road/Weighbridge Road Roundabout

We’ve constructed a new roundabout at the intersection of Remembrance Drive, Madden Road and Weighbridge Road in Ballarat to improve safety, reduce road trauma and save lives.

The new roundabout constructed at the intersection has improved safety and traffic flow for road users, reducing the risk and severity of crashes at the busy intersection.  

We thank residents and businesses in the area for their patience during this important upgrade.

Background

The Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) worked with the Arch of Victory/Avenue of Honour Committee, Victoria Police and City of Ballarat to develop the long-term solution at this intersection, that will reduce the rate of crashes, while preserving the integrity of the Avenue and its trees.

All works on the roundabout were completed in line with the strict conditions of the heritage permit awarded by Heritage Victoria, with tree protections in place throughout construction.

Remembrance Drive is an important part of Ballarat’s World War I history and a vital link for those who travel in and out of Ballarat from the west. It also has a significant and tragic crash history, particularly at the Madden Road and Weighbridge Road intersection.

During the five-year period between 2015 and the end of 2019, this intersection was the site of eight crashes, resulting in 16 people being injured, including one fatality and seven serious injuries.

The new roundabout will help slow traffic, simplify decision-making and reduce the impact angle of vehicles if a crash occurs.
Research shows that roundabouts can reduce fatal and serious injury crashes by up to 65 per cent.

Roundabouts are one of the safest types of intersections because they slow the flow of traffic and guide vehicles in one direction, reducing the risk and severity of crashes.

With the continued growth in the Ballarat West region increasing the number of road users, this roundabout will:

  • Encourage drivers to slow down
  • Simplify decision making
  • Reduce the impact angle of vehicles if a crash occurs
  • Reduce the risk of crashes at the intersection.
