Pyrites Creek Bridge Project
We’re undertaking bridge improvement works on the Pyrites Creek bridges at Anthony’s Cutting on the Western Freeway.
Underway
The project includes improvement works on the structural supports and road surfaces of the eastbound and westbound bridges. These works will ensure the strength of the bridges well into the future.
The project is scheduled for completion in December 2024, weather permitting.

Stage 2 works – mid-August to December, 2024
Stage 2 works started in mid-August. The westbound bridge is closed and traffic is travelling on the eastbound bridge.
The Western Freeway remains open to light and heavy vehicles. Two westbound lanes and one eastbound lane of traffic are available through the site, with speed restrictions of 40km/hr in place.
Light and heavy vehicles travelling eastbound have the option of staying on one lane on the Western Freeway or taking the detour around the site via the Old Western Highway.
Oversize and overmass vehicles
Oversize and overmass vehicles more than 2.55 metres wide and up to 30 metres in length, 5.0 metres wide and 5.0 metres high will be detoured via the Old Western Highway.
Oversize and overmass vehicles that exceed 30 metres in length, 5.0 metres in width or 5.0 metres in height will stay on the Western Freeway.
Property access
Access to residential properties and businesses on Cowans Road, in the works area and on the detour route will be retained. Temporary traffic lights will be installed on the detour route to ensure smooth traffic movements.
Old Western Highway lane closure
There is a lane closure on the eastbound side of the Old Western Highway, near Melton West Bacchus Road, following a landslip. This lane closure and speed restrictions will remain in place during the period of the detour.
DTP continually monitors the road network to ensure it is safe and will continue to monitor the condition of the Old Western Highway throughout this project.
Disruptions
There are significant changes in traffic conditions in this area on the Western Freeway during this project.
Speed limits are reduced and lane closures and detours implemented to protect the safety of crews and road users. Access to residential properties and businesses on Cowans Road in the works area and on the detour route are retained.
Delays are expected and road users are encouraged to plan their journey.
Please note: dates and timeframes of these works are dependent on a range of factors, including favourable weather and site conditions.
As this project progresses, we will update this website with disruption and detour information.
