Princes Highway and Westall Road safety improvements

We’re improving safety at the intersection of Princes Highway and Westall Road in Clayton by making the traffic lights more visible and reducing the risk of crashes.

Project status:

Underway

When to expect us

We’ll complete night works on Thursday 21 March from 9pm to  11pm. Following this, all works will be complete.

Please note, these dates and times are subject to change due to weather conditions.

What to expect during works

  • Lane closures on Princes Highway and Westall Road while we complete works. We will coordinate lane closures to minimise disruptions to traffic.
  • Low to medium levels of noise are expected during works. We’ll work towards minimising noise as much as possible.
  • A reduced speed limit of 40 km/h in place around the work site to keep crews safe.
  • Traffic management signs and controllers on site to help road users and move through the area safely.

What we're doing

To improve safety at the intersection we’re:

  • Replacing two existing straight traffic light poles with new curved outreach traffic light poles on Princes Highway which will make the traffic lights more visible for drivers approaching the intersection.
  • Installing a new traffic light on the existing pole in the median facing Princes Highway outbound traffic to help drivers travelling along Princes Highway see the lights and make journeys safer.
  • Upgrading all traffic lights at the intersection to brighter LED lights.
  • Installing visors on the traffic lights facing Princes Highway to reduce the see-through effect experienced by drivers and effect of sun glare.

Project background

These works will improve safety and reduce the likelihood of crashes at the intersection of Princes Highway and Westall Road.

These improvements are being made as part of the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program which provides $110 million each year to reduce the risk of crashes at targeted road locations.
