Princes Highway West Upgrades

The Australian Government has committed $262.3 million towards the Princes Highway corridor in Victoria to support implementation of the Princes Highway Corridor initiative.

Project status:

Underway

Details

The Princes Highway is the main transport spine south-west Victoria, supporting key regional industries and the major regional centres.

We’re working to plan a corridor that is safer, more resilient to change and population growth, which delivers more efficient movements and services, and promotes economic activity.

Feedback provided by local government, key industries and community help us prioritise projects across Victoria, to meet future demands of heavier and wider high-performance freight vehicles

Upgrades will improve road safety for all road users and better connect people with jobs and services, and goods to market.

Bridgeworks

Throughout early 2022, upgrades have taken place on bridges along the Princes Highway across the Merri River Bridge in Dennington and the Fitzroy River Bridge in Tyrendarra.

Upcoming bridge works along the Princes Highway include:

  • Rail bridges in Dennington, Weerite and Allansford;
  • Shaw River Yambuk;
  • Surrey River Narrawong;
  • Glenelg River Dartmoor;
  • Mount Emu Creek Panmure; and
  • Moyne River Rosebrook.

Further information will be provided as construction timelines are confirmed. We look forward to working with local communities in the lead up to each of these works starting.

Port Fairy North Main Drain Bridgeworks

In addition to the above works, the Australian Government invested $664,000 under its Princes Highway Corridor Bridge Strengthening initiative to repair and strengthen the bridge over North Main Drain in Port Fairy.

These works involved profiling the bridge deck and installing carbon fibre rods to strengthen the bridge. These works were completed earlier in 2022 and we thank the community for their patience whilst these works were underway.

Overtaking Lanes

In addition to bridgeworks, a number of overtaking lanes will be installed along the Princes Highway to improve safety and efficiency along the corridor. These overtaking lanes will each be up to 4km in length, and will be situated in the following locations:

  • Tyrendarra, Westbound (underway);
  • Terang, Eastbound;
  • Terang, Westbound; and
  • Yambuk, Westbound (complete).
