Princes Highway - Geelong Road safety improvements
We’re improving safety along Geelong Road, between the intersection of Barkly Street and Little Boundary Road to reduce road trauma and save lives.
Underway
Project update - August 2021
Preliminary vegetation trimming works on Princes Highway-Geelong Road were completed in January 2020 as part of this project.
We’ll keep the community posted on key construction dates and project information ahead of when construction recommences.
What we're doing
Flexible safety barriers are already in place along sections of the road.
As part of this project we will be installing additional flexible safety barriers on the left-hand side and centre of the road in high-risk locations, providing a continuous safer journey for people traveling along this route.
Infrastructure plays a vital role in preventing serious crashes. It also helps reduce the severity of crashes when they’re unavoidable.
Road safety infrastructure such as flexible safety barriers, wide centreline treatments and rumble strips help prevent the most common crash types, head-on and run-off-road collisions, which in 2015 were responsible for 40% of Victoria’s road deaths and serious injuries.
Mistakes happen, which as humans we can’t always avoid. What we can do is build more forgiving road infrastructure so that when a mistake does happen on the road, it doesn’t cost a life.

Working with Major Transport Infrastructure Authority and Transurban
Nearby Project: West Gate Tunnel Project
The West Gate Tunnel Project will deliver Melbourne’s vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge and a second freeway link between the west and the city.
While works on the West Gate Tunnel Project are underway on the West Gate Freeway, we’ll work with MTIA and Transurban to identify ways we can help minimise disruptions and traffic congestion in the area.
If you’re passing through, please drive safely and keep an eye out for changed traffic conditions.
Background
Princes Highway-Geelong Road is a major road linking suburban Melbourne to the western suburbs. It's a popular route for daily commuters, families, public transport and the freight industry.
Between January 2012 and December 2016, there were 23 crashes recorded along this stretch of road and ten crashes resulted in serious injury. During this five-year period, more than a third of crashes on Princes Highway-Geelong Road were run-off-road and head-on crashes.
As part of the Victorian Government’s $1.4 billion investment into road safety infrastructure in partnership with the TAC, we’re improving safety along Princes Highway– Geelong Road to reduce road trauma and save lives.
