Plenty Road and David Street safety improvements

We’re improving safety at the intersection of Plenty Road and David Street in Preston as part of the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program.

Project status:

Underway

Project update - June 2024

The first stage of works are now complete. We’ve constructed a new traffic island on the east side of David Street, upgraded pram ramps, and installed new signage and line marking.

We’ll be returning in June to complete the final stage of works:

  • installing tram separation kerbs and flexible bollards on Plenty Road
  • asphalting and line marking to reinstate the work area.

These works will be completed at night to minimise disruption to traffic, tram services and local business.

When to expect us

Works will take place from Tuesday 18 June 2024 to Thursday 20 June 2024, between 11pm and 5am.

Works are subject to suitable weather and ground conditions.

What to expect

During the works, you can expect:

  • temporary traffic lane, footpath and on-street parking closures with localised detours near the worksite
  • low to medium noise levels
  • vehicles, machinery and contractors on site
  • no disruption to power supply
  • no impact to tram services
  • access for emergency services will be maintained.

Please follow signage and traffic management around the work zone and allow extra time when planning your journey.

We thank the community for their patience whilst we complete these final works.

About the project

We’re implementing a ‘Left-in, Left-out’ (LILO) treatment on both approaches of David Street to keep traffic moving and reduce the chance of collisions occurring from vehicles crossing multiple lanes of traffic.

As part of this safety upgrade, we’ve:

  • constructed a traffic island on David Street, east of Plenty Road, to facilitate the left only turn movements
  • installed new signage and upgraded line marking to alert drivers to the changed traffic conditions
  • upgraded the pram ramps on all four corners of David Street to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility.

We’re also installing separation kerb and flexible bollards in the centre of Plenty Road to restrict right turn movements in and out of David Street.

The above map shows the safety improvements we're delivering at Plenty Road and David Street, Preston. It shows the key features of the upgrade, including the separation kerb, traffic island, pram ramps, line marking and no right turn signage.

Alternative routes to access David Street

Motorists wanting to turn right in and out of David Street can take alternative routes, such as the signalised intersection at Gower Street that provides a safe, dedicated place for motorists to turn right in and out of Plenty Road.

Background

In the five years leading up to June 2020, 13 crashes were reported at the intersection of Plenty Road and David Street. Seven of the crashes occurred as a result of motorists turning right from David Street and failing to give way to vehicles travelling northbound on Plenty Road.
