Northern Trail bike path
As part of the Victorian Governments’ $15.3 million program to better connect our suburbs with safer, accessible, and more enjoyable walking and bike paths, we will provide a safer connection along Studley Road from the front of Heidelberg Station to Darebin Street.

Project update - May 2023
We completed the first stage of the Northern Trail bike path project in August 2022. This involved creating a 3m wide Shared Use Path (SUP) from the front of Heidelberg Station to Burgundy Street, Heidelberg.
We’ve now completed stage two, which involved installing bike lanterns to create safer crossing times for pedestrians and bike riders at the intersection of Burgundy Street and Studley Road, Heidelberg.
Additional improvements to complete the connection from Studley Road to Darebin Street are expected to commence in early 2024.
We will notify the community ahead of these works taking place.
About the project
The Northern Trail bike path will provide healthy transport options for people, while supporting Victoria’s Transport Sector Emissions Reduction Pledge.
This active transport link will provide a range of benefits to local communities including:
- Safer places to walk and ride for people of varied abilities
- Safer ways to walk and ride to local places such as shops, schools, public transport, recreation centres, and places of work
- A better-connected bike riding network in the Banyule area
- Healthier, more affordable, and more sustainable ways to commute.
Providing safer bike riding and walking options encourages more people to choose active transport options for everyday trips within their neighbourhood.
What we are doing
We’re continuing to roll out projects across Victoria that will make active transport options like walking and bike riding safer, better connected and more accessible.
As part of the Northern Trail Bike Path Project, we will:
- Create a 3m wide SUP along Studley Road, from the front of Heidelberg Station to Burgundy Street.
- Install bike lanterns and safer crossing times for pedestrians and bike riders at the Burgundy Street/ Studley Road intersection.
- Widen the existing 2m wide SUP to create a 3m wide SUP between Burgundy Street and Darebin Street.
- Improve street lighting, where necessary, along the Northern Trail bike path.
- Remove one parking space on Burgundy Street to facilitate improvements.
